STIMY #46

You Don't Ask, You Don't Get

๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป STIMIES,

There are now 6,055 STIMY Newsletter subscribers!

I'm writing this in a lovely cafe on a public holiday, blown away by how 1.5 years can change so many things. I now have:

  • The freedom to work from anywhere (I'll be in Japan next week for about a month!);
  • The inability to keep up with Malaysian public holidays - I now understand why employers complain that there are too many holidays ๐Ÿคฃ; and
  • The joy of doing something I love and which therefore doesn't feel like work.

Last I wrote, I was embarking on an epic interview marathon.

Now we're nearing the end. There are 2 interviews left:

  • Tomorrow, with Ken Perenyi: A master art forger who made millions from selling fake fine art paintings, was chased by the mafia & FBI for years, got away scot-free and wrote a book to tell everyone how he did it!
  • Next week, with Daniel Pink: Former speechwriter for Al Gore & x7 New York Bestselling Author

The thing that ties both of them?

It took me years to get them to say YES.

Ken was one of the very first people I reached out to when I started STIMY. Back in 2020.

This was before I had a name for my podcast, no logo, no website, no interviews recorded... nothing.

Dan Pink was another person I reached out to years ago. The first time I asked, he said:

When I asked in April 2022, he said no.

I asked again in 6 months; again, he was too busy.

After 1 year, I emailed yet again and he said... YES!

Which goes to prove that when it comes to asking for things (like interviews):

  • It's a numbers game;
  • You must never take NO as the final answer (but you should exercise your discretion; sometimes a NO is really a no & you could be burning bridges); and
  • Perseverance is key.

So don't give up!

You can't fail if you just keep going ๐Ÿ˜Š

Meet the Willy Wonka of Malaysia

Another new STIMY episode is out!

This time with Rodney Wong, the CEO of Munchy's - one of the largest Malaysia-based snack food manufacturer around with presence in over 60 countries globally.

Rodney has had quite the varied career.

From tobacco to Coca-Cola, Petronas and now the world of snacks and sweets, Rodney is testimony to the fact that we all need to take charge of our own career and personal development to get to where we want.

The question is... how?

While everyone's path is different, Rodney's shared his personal journey on STIMY, highlighting the people who were significant in his journey, why paying forward is so important him, what it's like working with founders on their 'baby' and his vision for the future.

Watch the episode in full on: YouTube, Spotify & Apple Podcast.

The show notes & transcript can be found here.

Interesting Discoveries

I spend hours on LinkedIn & love finding posts that inspire thought and teach me how to be a better writer on the platform. Here are some that caught my eye recently:

  1. โ€‹Very clever, very mindful, very demureโ€‹
  2. โ€‹Cut out all the useless corporate jockeyingโ€‹
  3. โ€‹7 recommendations for hardware startupsโ€‹
  4. โ€‹We just hit 7 million YouTube subscribersโ€‹
  5. โ€‹Ever wonder what separates successful leaders from the rest?โ€‹
  6. โ€‹A lost suitcase created one of the greatest writers in the worldโ€‹
  7. โ€‹I'm scared to hit post. It's too personal!โ€‹

Quick Thoughts

LinkedIn is full of fluffy, spammy, generic posts. The noise is louder than ever and LinkedIn itself has stated that they are making every effort to tapper down on posts that provide no value.

What the above posts have in common: They leverage on the author's personal experience and speak on topics that are dear to people in their respective industry.

And here's a secret that most of them won't tell you: Often, these people aren't the ones writing & hitting publish on their post.

They have a person/team behind them that makes it possible!

So the next time you see a highly successful founder going viral online for writing every day, don't be disheartened.

They might have more help than you can imagine.

So just do you.

Or... ask for the LinkedIn personal branding experts to help you. It's an investment into your future. ๐Ÿ˜‰
